About the Train Maya (Tren Maya)

Train Maya, also known as the Maya Train or Tren Maya in Spanish, is a train whose route is 966 miles (1,554 km) long that encircles Mexico's Yucatán Peninsula.

Fully completed in early 2025, Train Maya's construction began in 2020 with the goal of helping more people see the rest of the Yucatan.

Train Maya begins at the Cancún International Airport and travels southwest towards Palenque, Chiapas, via two routes that encircle the peninsula.

With 45 trains running across 34 stations that serve cities and historical sites, Train Maya helps visitors and residents see and enjoy more of Mexico's beautiful Yucatan.

Train Maya is new, comfortable, and safe, and it is waiting for you to ride it!

A very brief history of Train Maya

Train Maya was first conceived as a way to help tourists (both local and foreign) travel further afield and discover more of Mexico's Yucatán.

Construction began in 2018 and was fully completed in early 2025.

Business and civic leaders around the region worked together to help plan, fund, and build Train Maya.

Funded by a tourism tax, Train Maya was designed to help revitalize much of the Yucatan's less-developed economic areas.

When you visit Mexico and ride Train Maya, you help support local and regional businesses.

Getting there: Train Maya basics

While you can access Train Maya from any of its stations while you are in Mexico, the most common way for someone travelling from the US or elsewhere is to access the train from one of the many airports (listed in the table above), which all have shuttles that connect passengers to the closest station.
